Introducing Cards for Bravery

Cards for Bravery is a charity founded by Katie Callaghan in 2015. Katie lives with long term health conditions meaning she spent a large majority of her childhood in hospital After receiving a lovely card from her friend during a lengthy hospital stay, she came up with the idea to distribute positive, handmade cards to other hospitalised children to help brighten their day.

Starting by herself, the charity has grown rapidly, now having approximately 10 volunteers to help with the day-to-day running. This includes a whole team of general volunteers to help with card counting, distributing, packaging and local events; an admin team, including outreach and fundraising; and a social media team managing the various platforms we are on: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and TikTok.

Alongside card distribution, we also do a variety of projects. We have been distributing Bravery packages for  6  years, where we now do them bi-monthly. Our bravery packages are individualised packages tailored to each recipient. We match what the recipient wants through looking at the nomination form someone filled out for them. This allows us to brighten up the days of hospitalised and chronically ill children in a different way, providing them with things they really want that will make them happier during a difficult time.

We created our first Activity pack in 2021 and have since distributed hundreds of  copies to our hospital partnerships. This gives hospitalised children some fun activities to do during lengthy hospital stays, including things like word searches, connect the dots, and colouring pages. We are hoping to be working on different versions of our original activity pack for more people to enjoy.

Thanks to the fabulous work from our team, we are delighted to now be partnered with more than 30 hospitals, hospices and CAHMS units, distributing over 25,000 cards around the UK. We have some exciting projects coming up that we cannot wait to share with you! You can keep up to date with us through our bi-monthly newsletter by signing up at the bottom of our 'contact us' page here.
