Play might seem simple but its impact is profound, especially in healthcare environments. For children in hospital, play is more than just a way to pass the time. It helps them cope with stress, manage their fears, and make sense of the medical procedures they may undergo. Research has shown that play reduces anxiety, speeds up recovery, and improves overall well-being. This is why healthcare play specialists are such vital members of paediatric healthcare teams. They create safe spaces for children and young people to express their emotions, learn about their treatments, and enjoy moments of normality in what can often be a scary and unfamiliar environment.
Personal Experience with Play in Healthcare
Katie Callaghan, founder of Cards for Bravery, spent lengthy times in the hospital as a child. When thinking about her experience with play in healthcare she knows firsthand how important play can be during a difficult time.
I remember how intimidating the hospital felt—everything was so sterile, and the sounds of machines were overwhelming.
But the one thing that made it easier for her was the opportunity to play and create a bond with the play specialists in her hospital. Whether it was a simple board game, art, or just having someone to talk to who wasn’t a doctor, those playful moments brought a sense of normality and joy into an otherwise scary situation. It’s something she will never forget, and it’s one of the reasons she is so passionate about bringing the same experience to other children today.
Celebrating Play with Cards for Bravery
This week, 14th - 18th October, is Play in Healthcare Week, an annual celebration that highlights the importance of play in hospital settings. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how play brings joy, comfort, and healing to children facing medical challenges and to celebrate the amazing work play specialists provide. This year’s theme, "Celebrating Play," reminds us just how powerful playful moments can be, not only for children but for their families and caregivers as well.Â
To promote positive play, Cards for Bravery had the special privilege of creating cards with children in the Royal London Hospital, where our journey began! We celebrated the theme of play by designing cards with the children that were not only colourful and fun, but also allowed them to express themselves creatively and feel empowered during their stay. It was amazing to see how something as simple as a card could lift their spirits and provide a moment of joy.
How Our Charity Supports Children Through Play
In addition to creating uplifting cards, we also provide activity packs filled with fun and engaging activities to help keep children entertained during their hospital stays. These packs include everything from colouring sheets and crossword puzzles to other creative activities that offer a distraction to children from their medical treatments. Through our partnership with play specialists, we ensure that children have access to these resources, giving them moments of joy and creativity when they need it most. Play not only brings smiles; it builds resilience and gives children the strength to face their challenges with hope.
As we celebrate Play in Healthcare Week, let’s continue to support and advocate for the importance of play in medical environments. Whether through donating to charities like ours or simply spreading awareness, each of us can contribute to making hospitals more playful and positive spaces for children.
Thank you for celebrating with us!
